José Darío Cruz potentially named Honduras Education Minister

José Darío Cruz Zelaya, the administrative vice-rector of the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional Francisco Morazán (UPNFM), is a leading candidate to become the new Minister of Education in Honduras. Cruz confirmed he was summoned to Casa Presidencial for meetings with representatives of President Nasry Asfura.

Following a two-hour meeting with Presidential Private Secretary Luis Castro to discuss the educational system and higher education, Cruz received a subsequent notification to return to the presidential residence. While he has not received official confirmation of the appointment, Cruz stated he has already presented his curriculum vitae and academic plans to the administration.

If appointed, Cruz intends to prioritize reducing school dropout rates, strengthening scholarship programs, improving educational quality, and addressing infrastructure needs in schools. He noted that the challenges facing the Honduran educational system are well-diagnosed and require coordinated execution.
