José Gervasio Artigas death anniversary commemorated in Uruguay
Various ceremonies were held in Uruguay to commemorate the 176th anniversary of the death of General José Gervasio Artigas, who passed away on September 23, 1850, in Paraguay.
In Fray Bentos, a ceremony took place at the Plaza de Armas of the 9th Infantry Battalion “Rincón”. The event included the traditional burning of flags, a ritual performed by the unit's most senior soldier. Speeches highlighted Artigas's role as a statesman and military leader, referencing key historical milestones such as the Revolution of 1811, the Battle of Las Piedras, and the Exodus of the Oriental People.
In Puntas de Valdez, the San José Departmental Government and the Patriotic Commission held an act at the Intendencia administrative office. Local authorities and students participated in floral offerings and cultural activities. Historians at the event emphasized Artigas's legacy regarding sovereignty, equality, and his influence on national identity, noting that his principles remain relevant to the defense of freedom and justice.
