José Giacone details financial limits at Alajuelense and Saprissa

Argentine coach José Giacone, who recently led Herediano to a national championship, a Supercopa and a Recopa, reflected on his earlier managerial posts in Costa Rica. In an interview on the programme El Mundialito, Giacone said he lacked the experience to take over Liga Deportiva Alajuelense in 2016, noting that the club’s resources and infrastructure were far beyond what he had encountered at Belén FC. He directed Alajuelense for only nine matches before resigning, attributing the short tenure to his inexperience and the club’s financial constraints.

He also spoke about his later stint at Deportivo Saprissa after the team’s 2024 tetracampeonato, describing a lack of resources and managerial decisions he considered inappropriate. Giacone mentioned limited budgets, inadequate facilities, and challenges in player recruitment, including difficulties with the Spanish forward Sabín Merino. Both periods, he said, were shaped by economic limitations that conditioned his work and decision‑making.
