José Iglesias makes Broadway debut in Buena Vista Social Club

Former Major League Baseball player and recording artist José ‘Candelita’ Iglesias has made his Broadway debut in the musical ‘Buena Vista Social Club’. Performing as the Narrator, Iglesias becomes the first Latino MLB player to appear in a Broadway musical.

The production, which is inspired by the 1997 Grammy Award-winning album and true events, tells the story of the legendary Cuban artists behind the project. The musical features an Afro-Cuban band and explores themes of survival and second chances set in Havana.

Iglesias, who played for teams including the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, and New York Mets, began his limited six-week engagement at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on August 27. He is scheduled to remain with the production until October 4.
