José Luis Bergillos, former mayor of Lucena, has died

José Luis Bergillos, the former mayor of Lucena and a prominent political figure in the Córdoba province, has passed away at the age of 79.

Bergillos served as the mayor of Lucena for three consecutive terms between 1999 and 2011. During his tenure, he was credited with driving significant industrial growth in the region, particularly in the furniture manufacturing and commercial refrigeration sectors. He also held leadership roles within the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) and served as a leader for the Subbética Rural Development Group until 2019.

Local leaders have expressed their condolences. The PSOE of Lucena described him as a fundamental figure and a reference point for generations of socialists. Salvador Fuentes, president of the Diputación de Córdoba, praised Bergillos as a dedicated public servant who left an important legacy through his commitment to the Subbética region and his proximity to the citizens.
