Argentina judge dismisses $LIBRA crypto fraud case against Milei family

Argentine Federal Judge Marcelo Martínez de Giorgi has dismissed the criminal investigation into President Javier Milei and his sister, Karina Milei, regarding the collapse of the $LIBRA cryptocurrency. The ruling, which follows a request from prosecutor Eduardo Taiano, concluded that the events did not constitute criminal fraud, abuse of authority, or influence peddling.

The investigation centered on a February 2025 social media post by the President that preceded a rapid price surge and subsequent crash of the $LIBRA token. The judge ruled that the token operated within a volatile speculative market and that the price collapse alone did not prove a premeditated fraudulent scheme. Furthermore, the court determined that the President's promotion of the project on his personal X account did not constitute an institutional act or the use of public resources.

The dismissal also extends to nine other individuals, including US businessman Hayden Mark Davis, Mauricio Novelli, and Manuel Terrones Godoy. President Milei reacted to the decision by criticizing the investigation as a “tremendous political and media operation” intended to damage his administration.
