Zapatero jewelry case: Judge rejects recusal of Joyería Yanes

Judge José Luis Calama of the Audiencia Nacional has rejected a recusal request filed by former Spanish President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero regarding the appointment of Joyería Yanes to conduct a second appraisal of seized jewelry.

The jewelry was found in a safe in Zapatero's office during a search related to the Plus Ultra case, which involves investigations into potential tax and smuggling offenses. A previous appraisal by Joyería Ansorena valued the pieces at approximately 1.3 million euros.

Zapatero's defense argued that Joyería Yanes lacked impartiality because its director general, Juan Yanes López, had publicly suggested on television that the collection could be worth several million euros. The judge ruled that the recusal was premature and that the defense failed to prove any legal grounds for disqualification, such as personal interest or kinship, noting that public opinions do not automatically disqualify the specific professionals who will eventually perform the technical report.
