José Luís Carneiro sets conditions for State Budget support

José Luís Carneiro has outlined conditions for the Socialist Party (PS) to support the 2027 State Budget through abstention, while rejecting future motions of censure against Luís Montenegro’s government.

Carneiro stated that a fundamental condition is a public commitment from the government to ensure that any constitutional revision proceeds with the agreement of the two largest democratic parties. He emphasized that while the PS does not view constitutional revision as a political priority, it seeks to prevent the government from negotiating such changes solely with the Chega party.

Other points raised include the need for guaranteed funding for ongoing investments previously covered by the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) and addressing the government's response to recent storms. Carneiro criticized the current administration for incompetence and insensitivity regarding disaster support, noting that the stability provided by the PS's abstention should be used to facilitate effective governance.
