Mexico commemorates 261st anniversary of José María Morelos y Pavón

Various Mexican authorities held ceremonies to commemorate the 261st anniversary of the birth of José María Morelos y Pavón, a key figure in the Mexican War of Independence.

In Puebla, Governor Alejandro Armenta Mier addressed students, stating that Morelos’s legacy serves as a permanent lesson on freedom and national identity. He emphasized that the principles of liberty, equality, and justice should guide public officials to combat corruption and the abuse of power. Local deputy María Fernanda de la Barreda Angón added that true independence must translate into tangible improvements in daily life, such as access to healthcare and education.

In Michoacán, municipal authorities in Zamora, led by Mayor Carlos Soto Delgado, honored the “Servant of the Nation” through floral offerings and civic acts, highlighting his role as a priest and military leader. Meanwhile, in Morelia, Mayor Alfonso Martínez Alcázar and Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla participated in a ceremony at Plaza Jardín Morelos, where academic Moisés Guzmán Pérez called for the preservation of the hero’s memory as a foundation for a better future.
