José Mourinho returns to Real Madrid after declining Portugal role

Reports have surfaced regarding significant historical and current developments involving football manager José Mourinho. In 2008, Mourinho was the preferred candidate for FC Barcelona to succeed Frank Rijkaard. According to journalist Xavi Torres, Mourinho won a decisive internal vote among the club's board, while Pep Guardiola received no votes. However, then-president Joan Laporta ultimately chose Guardiola following recommendations from Johan Cruyff and sporting director Chiki Begriestin.

In more recent developments, Mourinho has reportedly declined an offer to manage the Portugal national team to facilitate his return to Real Madrid. Following negotiations initiated by President Florentino Pérez in April, Mourinho has signed a three-season contract with the Spanish club, lasting until June 2029. This move follows a pattern of Real Madrid re-hiring successful former managers, such as Carlo Ancelotti and Zinedine Zidane.
