José Mourinho signals squad reduction at Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager José Mourinho has indicated a preference for a streamlined squad, stating, "Quiero una plantilla corta, de 20 jugadores más los que tenemos lesionados." Following a victory against Ferencvaros, Mourinho emphasized the importance of versatile players like Bernardo, who can cover multiple positions to accommodate a smaller roster.

In a move toward squad reduction, Mourinho has decided not to integrate young Argentine talent Franco Mastantuono into his immediate plans. Despite previous efforts by Xabi Alonso and Álvaro Arbeloa to provide the player with continuity, Mourinho opted to loan Mastantuono to Fiorentina without an option to buy. The decision follows observations during pre-season where Mastantuono struggled with physical influence and tactical space. While Real Madrid retains his rights until June 2027, the move signals Mourinho's preference for players ready for immediate competition over long-term developmental projects.
