José Mourinho's historical rivalry with FC Barcelona

José Mourinho's relationship with FC Barcelona evolved from a staff role to a fierce professional rivalry. Between 1996 and 2000, Mourinho served as an assistant coach at the club under Bobby Robson and Louis van Gaal.

The tension began when subsequent management, specifically under Sera Ferrer, did not wish to retain him on the coaching staff. Following his departure, Mourinho built a successful managerial career at Benfica, Porto, and Chelsea, winning Champions League titles.

A pivotal moment in the rivalry occurred in 2008 when Barcelona sought a successor to Frank Rijkaard. Although Mourinho was a candidate, the club chose Pep Guardiola instead. This rejection, combined with high-stakes Champions League matchups during his tenure at Chelsea and later Real Madrid, solidified his status as one of the club's most prominent antagonists.
