José Pileggi criticizes Ecuadorian football environment

Former Emelec president José Pileggi has reflected on his tenure at the Ecuadorian club, describing the football environment as “too complicated” and “very contaminated.” Pileggi, who assumed the presidency in November 2022 after being requested to run by the previous administration led by Nassib Neme, resigned in October 2024.

During a podcast interview, Pileggi stated that his two-year term was “just the necessary amount” due to the intense pressure and threats received when results do not meet expectations. He highlighted significant security concerns, noting that the risks extended beyond himself to his family due to the interests involved in the sport.

Regarding the club's finances, Pileggi defended his management, claiming he inherited a “bankrupt” institution and left it “organized and orderly.” He noted that his initial involvement with the club began in 2020 when he was invited to lead the youth divisions.
