José Sarney discharged from hospital after abdominal surgery
Former Brazilian President José Sarney, 96, has been discharged from UDI Hospital in São Luís, Maranhão, following a nine-day hospitalization. Sarney was admitted on October 9 after experiencing abdominal pain and underwent surgery to treat an intestinal obstruction.
Medical reports indicate a satisfactory clinical evolution. While discharged from the hospital on Saturday, October 17, Sarney will continue his recovery through outpatient medical follow-ups. During his stay, he spent time in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) before being moved to a standard room.
This recent hospitalization marks Sarney’s third medical admission since September. Earlier that month, he was treated for bacterial pneumonia, first at the UDI Hospital in São Luís and subsequently at Hospital Sírio-Libanês in São Paulo. Sarney served as the first civilian president during Brazil's redemocratization period from 1985 to 1990.
