José Sarney undergoes abdominal surgery and remains in ICU

Former Brazilian President José Sarney, 96, is currently in the intensive care unit (ICU) at UDI Hospital in São Luís, Maranhão, following abdominal surgery. The procedure was performed to treat an intestinal obstruction after Sarney presented with significant abdominal pain on Friday (9).

Medical bulletins from Rede D’Or indicate the surgery was successful and proceeded without complications. Sarney is reported to be in stable condition and is awake, receiving post-operative care from a multidisciplinary team. There is currently no scheduled date for his discharge.

This hospitalization follows a series of recent health issues. In September, Sarney was treated for bacterial pneumonia, which required stays at both UDI Hospital and Hospital Sírio-Libanês in São Paulo. He had recently participated in local elections in São Luís on October 4 before this latest medical emergency.
