José Sarney votes in São Luís at age 96

Former Brazilian President José Sarney, 96, cast his vote in São Luís, Maranhão, during the second round of the 2026 elections. Sarney, who used a wheelchair during the process, voted at the Escola Desembargador Sarney Costa in the São Francisco neighborhood.

The former president's participation follows a recent period of health challenges. He was hospitalized for nine days in early October to undergo surgery for an intestinal obstruction, receiving hospital discharge on October 17. This follows a previous hospitalization in September for bacterial pneumonia.

During his appearance, Sarney reflected on his presidency from 1985 to 1990, noting his role in restoring direct elections in Brazil and the country's transition from military rule to democracy. He described the election as a ‘festa da democracia’ (festival of democracy) and emphasized the importance of voting in shaping the nation's future.
