José Sócrates files complaint against prosecutor Rosário Teixeira

Former Portuguese Prime Minister José Sócrates has filed a criminal complaint against prosecutor Rosário Teixeira, who led the investigation into the Operação Marquês case. The complaint, submitted to the Attorney General, alleges that Teixeira may have committed the crime of perjury during testimony at the Lisbon Administrative Court.

The dispute stems from an administrative lawsuit in which Sócrates sought compensation from the State for delays in the Operação Marquês investigation. During court proceedings, Teixeira initially denied having any contact with journalists prior to Sócrates’ 2014 arrest. However, after being confronted with documentation, the prosecutor admitted to having spoken with a journalist regarding the ongoing investigation.

The court identified a “notorious contradiction” in the prosecutor's statements. Sócrates is now seeking an investigation to determine whether the initial denial was a deliberate attempt to provide false testimony under oath. As a preventive measure, the former Prime Minister has requested that Teixeira be removed from any investigations or decisions related to his legal matters.
