Jose Jesus Rodriguez identified as suspect in deadly Oakland stabbing spree
Jose Jesus Rodriguez, a 34-year-old man with a history of violence and mental health issues, has been identified as the suspect in a deadly stabbing spree across East Oakland. The attacks, which occurred on Monday, included a fatal stabbing of 58-year-old Gonzalo Lopez in Cesar Chavez Park, followed by several other stabbings at a gas station, the Fruitvale BART station, and nearby sidewalks.
Rodriguez was on parole following a 2019 prison sentence for a previous stabbing spree that targeted an Uber driver and a garbage collector. Court records indicate that a parole agent had warned last year that Rodriguez’s escalating behavior posed a “significant threat to the community” and noted a lack of appropriate programs to address his needs. Prior to the recent attacks, Rodriguez had reportedly been involved in other incidents, including an attempt to bite a police officer’s ear and swinging a wooden board at individuals.
