Jose Mourinho addresses 2015 Chelsea doctor controversy in Netflix series
In his new Netflix documentary series, Jose Mourinho has addressed the 2015 controversy involving former Chelsea doctor Eva Carneiro. The incident occurred during a Premier League match against Swansea City when Carneiro and physiotherapist Jon Fearn entered the pitch to treat Eden Hazard. Mourinho, angered by the decision which left Chelsea with only nine players on the field, directed a verbal tirade at the medical staff.
Mourinho maintains that he does not owe an apology, asserting that his remarks were not motivated by gender. He stated, “For me, a lady doctor is the same as a man’s doctor,” and argued that his reaction was a result of high tension common in football culture. Carneiro previously alleged sexual discrimination and reached a settlement with Chelsea after the incident led to her departure from the club.
Additionally, the documentary reveals details regarding Mourinho’s career decisions, including a failed agreement to join Manchester United in 2013. Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that Mourinho had initially accepted the role to succeed him but ultimately declined the position because he had given his word to Chelsea.
