Real Madrid faces early challenges under José Mourinho

José Mourinho has returned to Real Madrid on a three-year contract following a period of trophy droughts under previous managers. His second tenure, which began in the summer of 2026, has faced immediate challenges in La Liga.

After seven matches, Real Madrid sits in fourth place with 15 points, trailing league leaders Barcelona by six points. A recent 2-1 defeat to Atlético Madrid highlighted tactical struggles, specifically regarding midfield control and the integration of key players like Kylian Mbappé, Vinícius Jr, and Jude Bellingham. The squad has conceded eight goals in seven games, prompting discussions regarding defensive fragility.

Mourinho has emphasized a philosophy of total discipline and punctuality to rebuild the team's structure. His return was reportedly facilitated by Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez, who reached out to Mourinho to stabilize the club, leading the manager to decline a potential role with the Portuguese national team.
