Jose Mourinho’s 2008 Barcelona coaching proposal revealed

A 27-page presentation detailing Jose Mourinho’s vision for FC Barcelona has resurfaced, contained on a white USB drive that was kept by former vice-president Marc Ingla for 18 years.

In 2008, following a difficult season under Frank Rijkaard, Barcelona officials met with Mourinho in Lisbon to discuss his potential appointment. At the time, Mourinho was available after an unexpected departure from Chelsea. The proposal, presented at the Gestifute offices, outlined a tactical plan centered on a non-negotiable 4-3-3 system, an approach intended to honor the legacy of Johan Cruyff despite their strained relationship.

Mourinho’s plan emphasized ball-centric training sessions for both tactical and physical preparation. While the club was seeking a new direction to combat squad complacency, sporting director Txiki Begiristain reportedly preferred Pep Guardiola, who was then coaching Barcelona B.
