Mexico commemorates 258th anniversary of Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez

Various regions in Mexico held ceremonies to commemorate the 258th anniversary of the birth of Josefa Ortiz de Domínguez, a key figure in the Mexican War of Independence.

In Puebla, Governor Alejandro Armenta and state officials gathered at the Zócalo to honor her legacy. Laura Artemisa García Chávez, the state Secretary of Welfare, emphasized that recognizing Ortiz is an act of historical justice, noting that the independence movement cannot be understood without acknowledging the role of women. She highlighted that Ortiz’s determination serves as a reference for women's ongoing participation in public life, citing the current presidency of Claudia Sheinbaum as a milestone resulting from decades of struggle for female representation.

In the municipality of Corregidora, local authorities led a ceremony in El Pueblito. Officials performed a Guard of Honor to recognize her contributions to independence movements and her defense of indigenous rights. The event included students from the Fernando de Tapia Primary School, who were encouraged to view Ortiz as an inspiration for their own futures.
