Josep Castells to step down from Balearic Islands Parliament

Josep Castells, a deputy for Més per Menorca, has announced that he will not run in the party's primaries for the upcoming elections to the Parliament of the Balearic Islands. This decision marks the end of a twelve-year tenure representing Menorca in the chamber, which will conclude at the end of the current legislature in June 2027.

Castells cited “democratic hygiene” and the desire to facilitate political succession as his primary reasons for not seeking reelection. He stated that he believes “eternalizing oneself in positions is not positive for the good functioning of democracy” and encouraged younger members of his party to take up the mantle of representation.

Reflecting on his time in office, Castells emphasized the independence and freedom with which he exercised his mandate, noting that he never had to vote against his convictions. While stepping away from active parliamentary politics, he intends to remain committed to his political formation and continue collaborating with organizations such as GOB Menorca, the Ateneu de Maó, and the Cercle d’Economia.
