Josep Cusí, close friend and sailing partner of Juan Carlos I, dies at 92

Josep Cusí Ferret, a prominent Barcelona businessman and sailor, has passed away in Barcelona at the age of 92. Cusí was widely recognized as one of the closest and most loyal confidants of King Emeritus Juan Carlos I.

The two shared a profound connection through their passion for sailing, a relationship that began in the early 1970s when Cusí assisted the then-Prince during his preparations for the 1972 Munich Olympics. Cusí was the owner and shipbuilder of the legendary 'Bribón' series of sailboats, which Juan Carlos I skippered. Together, they achieved significant success in competitive regattas, including multiple Spanish championships and the Conde de Godó Trophy.

Beyond sports, Cusí was a multifaceted figure: an electronic engineer, an Olympic shooter in the 1968 Mexico City Games, and a former instructor for Francisco Franco. Following a stroke in 2021 that limited his mobility, his health had been declining. Juan Carlos I traveled to Barcelona to attend the private funeral services to pay his respects to his long-time friend and sailing partner.
