Partner of architect Josep Juanpere arrested in Baqueira death probe
The partner of renowned Catalan architect Josep Juanpere, co-founder of GCA Architects, has been arrested in Madrid in connection with his death in Baqueira. While his passing on December 26, 2025, was initially attributed to natural causes, a nine-month investigation by the Mossos d'Esquadra has shifted the focus toward potential criminal involvement.
Investigators are examining the behavior of the 65-year-old woman, Belén López Granados, who was with Juanpere at the time of his death. Key suspicions include her failure to call emergency services and the fact that she remained isolated with the ailing architect for approximately 24 hours, during which he was unable to communicate with family or friends. The investigation is exploring both the possibility of homicide and the crime of omission of the duty to assist.
Following her appearance before a judge in Vielha, López Granados was released on an 80,000 euro bail. Meanwhile, a key witness, the architect's nephew, remains in a medically induced coma, complicating efforts to reconstruct the final hours of Juanpere's life.
