Josep Lluís Trapero resigns as Director General of Mossos d'Esquadra

Josep Lluís Trapero has resigned as the Director General of the Mossos d'Esquadra, the Catalan police force, after two years in the position. Interior Minister Núria Parlon announced the resignation, noting that Trapero’s decision was personal and irrevocable. Trapero is expected to return to his former role within the Service Evaluation Division (DAS).

The resignation triggers a major reorganization of the police leadership. Ferran López will succeed Trapero as the new Director General. Additionally, Silvia Catà will become the new Chief Commissioner, succeeding Miquel Esquius, who is retiring. Catà’s appointment marks the first time a woman will hold the position of Chief Commissioner in the Mossos d'Esquadra.

Political reactions have been mixed. While members of the ERC and Comuns parties welcomed the departure, citing a need for a new era in the Interior Department, they expressed reservations regarding the appointment of Ferran López, specifically questioning the practice of having an active-duty officer hold a political leadership role. Minister Parlon emphasized that Trapero’s departure follows a period of professional service that helped strengthen the force.
