Josep Maria Mestres unveils new project for Teatre Nacional de Catalunya

Josep Maria Mestres has presented his project to become the new artistic director of the Teatre Nacional de Catalunya (TNC). He will officially assume the role for a four-season term starting in the 2027-2028 season, following a transition period with the current director, Carme Portaceli.

A central pillar of Mestres's proposal is the creation of a permanent resident company consisting of twelve professional performers under the age of 35. This group, comprising six actors and six actresses, will be selected through open auditions and will focus on classical repertoire, Catalan heritage, and contemporary works.

The project aims to strengthen the public dimension of the TNC, promote the Catalan language and culture, and foster connections with other public theaters in Spain and international institutions. Mestres also intends to encourage contemporary playwrights to engage with and reinterpret classical texts to create a dialogue between heritage and modern society.
