Josep Martinez secures starting goalkeeper role at Inter Milan
Josep Martinez has emerged as the primary goalkeeper for Inter Milan following a match against Monza. After two seasons of development, the club and manager Cristian Chivu have decided to place trust in the Spanish goalkeeper, who was signed from Genoa in the summer of 2024 for approximately 14 million euros.
Inter had previously considered other options, including Guglielmo Vicario, but opted to avoid a larger investment in the position. Martinez's recent performances, particularly during the latter part of last season in the Coppa Italia and his progress during training at Appiano Gentile, helped secure his position. He will be supported by experienced goalkeeper Ivan Provedel, though Chivu has emphasized maintaining high standards rather than enforcing rigid hierarchies.
Despite his new role, Martinez faces scrutiny regarding his ability to play with his feet during build-up play, a skill frequently associated with former keepers Sommer and Onana. His performance against Monza drew some apprehension from the San Siro crowd due to risky decisions in construction from the back. His next major test is scheduled against Cagliari.
