Josep Pascual honored for 50 years of Mediterranean sea observations
The Generalitat de Catalunya has recognized Josep Pascual, a meteorologist and oceanographer from L'Estartit, for his more than five decades of continuous maritime data collection. During an annual meeting of meteorological and phenological observer networks, Counselor Sílvia Paneque presented Pascual with a commemorative plaque to honor his contributions to understanding the Mediterranean climate and the effects of climate change.
Pascual has managed the local weather station since 1969. Since 1973, he has systematically recorded sea temperatures at various depths, and since 1990, he has also tracked sea levels. These records constitute one of the longest and most uninterrupted weekly marine temperature series in the Mediterranean. His data has gained international recognition, with NASA noting that his measurements align with satellite observations.
To ensure the continuity of this scientific series, Meteocat has provided Pascual with a new oceanographic probe valued at over 18,000 euros, funded by the Generalitat’s Climate Fund.
