Joseph Gibson jailed for Tinder fraud and impersonation
Joseph Gibson, a 35-year-old man from Denbighshire, has been sentenced to three years and two months in prison at Bristol Crown Court. Gibson pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud by false representation involving four victims.
Between July 2020 and October 2021, Gibson used various personas to defraud victims of approximately £68,000 (roughly $106,800). He falsely claimed to be a multimillionaire, a Special Boat Service veteran, an air ambulance pilot, and a doctor. He also manipulated victims by claiming he was suffering from terminal cancer, sometimes sending images of himself in a hospital setting.
Two of the victims were met through the dating app Tinder. One victim lost over £5,600, while another lost £21,000 after being promised high returns on investments. Gibson attempted to offer partial compensation of approximately $20,025, but the judge refused to defer the sentence for full repayment, instead ordering proceedings to recover the stolen funds.
