Joseph Gordon-Levitt warns of AI risks to democracy and intimacy

Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the United Nations’ global advocate for human-centric digital governance, has raised concerns regarding the rapid development of artificial intelligence. In a series of interviews, including with The New York Times, Gordon-Levitt argued that public discourse often focuses too narrowly on existential threats, such as human extinction, while overlooking more immediate societal risks.

He specifically highlighted the potential for AI to cause a decline in democracy and human empathy. Gordon-Levitt warned that tech companies are training models to “hijack your intimacy” by mimicking friendship and romantic connection. He also expressed concern over the economic power of these companies, suggesting that their pursuit of profit could lead to forms of totalitarianism.

Gordon-Levitt urged the public to focus their attention on the people and corporations building these technologies rather than the machines themselves. He emphasized the need for better communication and governance to ensure that the future is not designed solely by fast-moving businesses in their own interests.
