Joseph Hernandez withdraws from New Mexico re-election bid

New Mexico State Representative Joseph Hernandez (D-Shiprock) has withdrawn his candidacy for re-election following reports of a disruptive incident at a hotel in Chicago. Hernandez allegedly ran through the hotel naked and knocked on guest doors during the night.

In a statement, Hernandez cited a need to focus on his health and family while completing his current term. He also issued an apology and indicated he is seeking assistance for alcohol-related challenges.

The withdrawal follows calls for accountability from political opponents and leaders, including Republican State Senator Jim Townsend. Because the deadline to replace a post-primary candidate has passed and a potential replacement, Anthony Allison, was disqualified, the seat may remain uncontested by a Democrat, potentially aiding Republicans in their efforts to prevent a Democratic supermajority in the state.
