Joseph Lubin predicts merger of AI and cryptocurrency

Ethereum co-founder Joseph Lubin has proposed a thesis that artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency will eventually merge into a single system. Speaking on CNBC, Lubin argued that while AI can provide creativity and expertise, it lacks the ability to establish trust. He suggests that blockchains like Ethereum can fill this gap by providing a decentralized framework where automated work can be commissioned, completed, and settled without intermediaries.

In this envisioned ecosystem, AI agents could theoretically hire other agents, verify outputs, and settle payments on-chain. Lubin predicts Ethereum will evolve into a central settlement layer, functioning more as a back-office for software to settle accounts rather than a platform for human interaction.

Currently, Ethereum hosts approximately 9.2% of all registered AI agents under the ERC-8004 standard. The network also maintains significant capital, with $49.6 billion in decentralized finance (DeFi) applications and over $144 billion in stablecoins, providing the liquidity necessary for potential agent-driven economies. While the agent economy remains largely theoretical—with monthly agent payments showing significant fluctuations—Lubin views the integration of privacy technology and decentralized protocols as key to institutional adoption.
