Joshua Kushner addresses failed FIFA commercial rights deal

Joshua Kushner, founder of Thrive Capital, has publicly addressed his involvement in the failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) project. The initiative, proposed by FIFA President Gianni Infantino, aimed to sell a 20% stake in a new commercial subsidiary—valued at approximately $20 billion—to private investors, with Thrive Capital potentially leading a $4.2 billion investment.

The proposal was abandoned following intense backlash from regional football confederations, including UEFA, CONCACAF, and the AFC. Critics argued the deal would unfairly concentrate power and wealth, while UEFA members even threatened to boycott upcoming World Cup events. Kushner stated that his firm “failed to appreciate the political dynamics of global football” and noted that they would not have participated had they understood the potential fallout.

Kushner defended the underlying motivation of the FFE, asserting it was designed to redistribute capital more equitably among all 211 FIFA member associations, specifically to support development in underfunded nations. He clarified that the plan was intended to be a matter for member association votes rather than an obligation.

Legal repercussions continue as UEFA has petitioned a US federal court to subpoena Thrive Capital and Kushner for documents and communications regarding the deal. This action is part of UEFA's efforts to investigate the transaction and support a potential criminal mismanagement complaint against Infantino in Switzerland.
