Joshua Dorsett sentenced to 20 years for shooting two NYPD officers

Joshua Dorsett, 24, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by the Manhattan Supreme Court following a robbery and shooting in August 2024. Dorsett pleaded guilty to robbery and aggravated assault on a police officer involving a deadly weapon.

The incident occurred on August 1, 2024, when Dorsett robbed a mahjong parlor on Canal Street and held approximately 20 people at gunpoint. During the encounter, he fired at responding officers, wounding NYPD Lt. Carl Johnson and Sgt. Christopher Leap.

During the sentencing, Lt. Johnson, who was struck by the same bullet that hit Sgt. Leap, provided a victim impact statement. He criticized Dorsett for acting out of a ‘false sense of entitlement and power’ and noted that the shooting reinforced his oath to protect New York City.
