Joshua Wong pleads guilty to foreign collusion in Hong Kong
Joshua Wong, a prominent pro-democracy activist in Hong Kong, pleaded guilty in the High Court to conspiracy to collude with foreign forces to endanger national security. This marks his second prosecution under the Beijing-imposed national security law.
The charges stem from activities between July and November 2020, during which Wong and fellow activist Nathan Law allegedly sought international support to impose sanctions or blockades against China and Hong Kong. Prosecutors detailed a years-long campaign involving lobbying U.S. officials, including Nancy Pelosi and Marco Rubio, and promoting the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act.
Wong is currently serving a four-year and eight-month prison sentence for a separate subversion case related to an unofficial political primary. His guilty plea in this new case could potentially lead to a reduced sentence, though he still faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment if the court deems the offense to be of a grave nature.
Sentencing will be announced at a later date. Wong, 29, has been a central figure in Hong Kong's democracy movement since his teenage years, notably leading the 2014 Umbrella Movement.
