Josip Šincek central to investigation into 35,000 tons of illegal waste in Croatia

Josip Šincek, a businessman from Varaždin, is a central figure in a major investigation involving the illegal disposal of approximately 35,000 tons of waste across Croatia. According to Europol, USKOK, and police, the waste—primarily originating from Italy, Slovenia, and Germany—was falsely documented as recyclable material. Instead, it was reportedly buried or dumped in various locations, including Gospić, Benkovac, Varaždin, Senj, and Otočac.

The investigation covers suspected criminal association, environmental crimes, forgery, tax evasion, and money laundering. In Gospić, waste was allegedly stored in silos and open areas at the former PPK Velebita site. The probe also examines financial flows between related companies and includes Šincek’s family members and associates.

Recent reports highlight Šincek’s public appearances, including participation in a wine festival competition in Kutjevo, following his release from detention. Additionally, Šincek has previously been noted for receiving an award at the International Exhibition of Inventions in Geneva for a project called ‘Power Multiplier’. He has also made allegations regarding former state inspector Andrija Mikulić, claiming the official requested bribes to cease inspections of his companies.
