Journalists face violence in Mexico and censorship in Spain
Journalists in Mexico and Spain are facing significant challenges regarding safety and editorial independence. In Mexico, data from ARTICLE 19 shows that 181 journalists have been murdered since 2000 in connection with their work. In Spain, the TVE Information Council has denounced direct interference by management in news broadcasts, specifically regarding the Telediario 1. This has led to planned protests and the withdrawal of professional signatures from news reports to signal dissent against censorship and resource shortages.
Furthermore, a political controversy has emerged in Mexico involving Senator Julieta Ramírez. Journalist Enrique Acevedo reported that she is under investigation by US authorities and may be seeking cooperation with the Department of Justice. Ramírez has dismissed these claims as a smear campaign, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for media responsibility and the presentation of verifiable evidence.
In Ceuta, journalists have also demonstrated against physical aggression and coercion encountered while covering the migration crisis.
