Journalism training sessions in Italy address media stereotypes
A series of professional training courses for journalists in Italy will address the ethical responsibilities of media representation regarding Southern Italy and marginalized urban peripheries.
On September 17, 2026, the Sindacato Unitario dei Giornalisti della Campania, in collaboration with the University of Naples Federico II and other academic institutions, will host a seminar in Naples. The session focuses on how journalistic language and narratives may perpetuate stereotypes and prejudices regarding the Mezzogiorno, drawing on research conducted during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Following this, a session titled “Raccontare le periferie” will take place in Bologna on September 23, 2026. Promoted by the organization ‘Con i bambini’ and supported by the National Council of the Order of Journalists, this initiative explores the role of journalism as an ‘educating community.’ The program aims to address how the portrayal of peripheral neighborhoods can impact social mobility and combat educational poverty among minors.
