Journalist Adem Yavuz commemorated 52 years after death in Cyprus

A commemoration ceremony was held in the Küçük Kaymaklı region of Northern Cyprus to honor Adem Yavuz, a journalist killed 52 years ago during the second phase of the Cyprus Peace Operation. The event took place in the United Nations-controlled buffer zone at the site where Yavuz was attacked by Greek Cypriot forces in 1974.

Participants included representatives from various organizations, such as the Turkish Press Union, the Association of Martyrs' Families and Disabled Veterans, and the Cyprus Turkish Resistance Organization (TMT) Mujahids Association. Accompanied by UN officials, attendees laid wreaths at the location where Yavuz’s vehicle was targeted and observed a moment of silence.

Burhan Canbaz, President of the Turkish Press Union, delivered a speech highlighting the tragedy, noting that the driver, Mehmet Raşit, was killed in the attack and passenger Hüseyin Kiracıoğulları was seriously injured. Canbaz emphasized that Yavuz, who survived the initial attack only to be killed while being held captive, was targeted not as a combatant, but as a journalist holding a pen and a camera.
