Guatemala journalist Evelio López murdered, sparking riots in Huehuetenango

Journalist Evelio Lizandro López Sánchez, 34, was shot and killed on the night of Friday, October 2, in San Pedro Necta, Huehuetenango. López, who managed the digital news outlet 'Huehue es Noticias', had reportedly received death threats related to his work in the days preceding the attack.

The murder triggered violent unrest in the municipality. Protesters, demanding the immediate arrest of a suspected perpetrator, burned a National Civil Police (PNC) substation, a residence, and a pickup truck. The PNC clarified that no suspects had been detained at the time of the riots and warned that the vandalism could obstruct the investigation.

The Huehuetenango Press Association has formally demanded an exhaustive and transparent investigation by the Ministry of the Interior and the Public Ministry. Local press groups expressed deep concern regarding the safety of journalists working outside the capital, noting that the killing reinforces the 'difficult' environment for media workers in Guatemala. Authorities are currently working to identify both the material and intellectual authors of the crime.
