Journalist assaulted inside Palmas City Council

A journalist was physically assaulted inside the Palmas City Council headquarters on Tuesday. Video footage shows Nelcivan Costa Feitosa, also known as Pastor Nelcivan, striking Kaio Costa, the director of the Tocantins State Union of Professional Journalists (Sindjor-TO).

During the altercation, Costa reported being subjected to homophobic slurs. The Sindjor-TO issued a formal note of repudiation, condemning the violence and discrimination. The union emphasized that professional journalism should not be confused with personal attacks or harassment and called for an immediate investigation, the preservation of security camera footage, and the identification of witnesses.

The Palmas City Council also released a statement describing the incident as unacceptably violent. Legislative police were called to the scene to contain the situation and record the occurrence.
