Journalist associations petition U.S. Congress over press visa restrictions

More than 30 non-profit journalist associations and press freedom organizations have sent a letter to the United States Congress protesting new visa restrictions for foreign journalists. The groups argue that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) policy undermines the nation's reputation as a sanctuary for journalists and a global leader in press freedom.

The letter highlights concerns that the new rule, which limits visa durations to approximately eight months, creates an unstable environment for journalists and their families attempting to establish residency, such as for housing or schooling. There are also fears that officials might use the threat of deportation or visa non-renewal to influence news content to align with the current administration's preferences.

Advocates warned that these restrictions could encourage other nations to adopt similar measures and may impact foreign students studying journalism in the U.S. The organizations are calling on Congress to intervene before the rule takes effect on September 15.
