Journalist criticizes Tanju Özcan over political rhetoric

Journalist, writer, and television producer Gürkan Hacır has issued sharp criticisms against Tanju Özcan, the former Mayor of Bolu who was removed from office and sentenced to prison during a pending trial.

Hacır highlighted the discrepancy between Özcan’s past political stances and his recent courtroom behavior, specifically referencing Özcan’s comment about sitting “like a cat” during legal proceedings. The journalist recalled Özcan’s previous high-profile rhetoric regarding refugees and migrants, including past promises to arrange bus tickets for their removal from Bolu and implementing higher water utility rates for foreigners.

Hacır also noted Özcan’s tendency to intervene in national political issues outside his jurisdiction, such as comments regarding Abdullah Öcalan. He urged opposition voters to be more cautious of politicians who make “empty promises” and “big words” that lack substance.
