Journalist Eduardo Meirelles dies at 30 from heart attack
Brazilian journalist Eduardo Meirelles, 30, died in the early hours of 29 July 2026 in Rio de Janeiro after a sudden heart attack. He had a known heart condition and collapsed inside his apartment before an ambulance arrived.
Meirelles, a graduate of the University of Brasília, was active in student and social movements, worked as a press officer for the Federal Senate, and later focused on Indigenous rights. He authored the biography of actress Lucélia Santos and co‑hosted a podcast on environmental issues. His death was mourned by Santos, who posted on Instagram, and by family members who confirmed the cause of death.
The body is being transferred to Luziândia, Goiás, where Meirelles was born and where his family resides.
