Ekrem İmamoğlu espionage case: Court continues detention of defendants
The third hearing of the political espionage case involving Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, journalist Merdan Yanardağ, campaign director Necati Özkan, and Hüseyin Gün took place in Silivri. During the proceedings, the court decided to continue the detention of all four defendants.
Ekrem İmamoğlu criticized the judicial process, noting that 20 lawsuits have been filed against him in the last two years and that he has faced approximately 23 different judges. He specifically questioned the National Intelligence Organization (MİT), asking if they possessed any reports or findings to support the espionage allegations.
Journalist Merdan Yanardağ argued that the case is a conspiracy intended to silence him and his colleagues, as well as to seize control of the TELE1 channel. Necati Özkan also defended the defendants, stating that there is no evidence of secret information being obtained or activities harmful to Turkey.
The prosecution has requested prison sentences of up to 20 years for the defendants. The hearing has been adjourned until December 23.
