Journalist federations demand safety guarantees for media in Ceuta

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) have called on Spanish authorities to guarantee the safety of media professionals reporting in Ceuta. The organizations are condemning verbal and physical harassment directed at news teams from LaSexta and RTVE during protests held on August 25 and 26 regarding the management of the migration crisis.

One reported incident involved a LaSexta journalist and camera operator who were surrounded by protesters and forced to seek refuge after being intimidated while conducting an interview. These events occur as Ceuta remains under a national security interest status, involving a coordinated response from the National Police, Civil Guard, and the Armed Forces.

The demand for protection comes amid ongoing tension following a massive influx of migrants in late July, which the IFJ notes resulted in tens of thousands of people crossing the border.
