Journalist Hamurabi Huesca Manzano killed in Oaxaca armed attack

Journalist Hamurabi Huesca Manzano, director of the digital news outlet Pinotepa Comunica, was killed during an armed attack in Santiago Pinotepa Nacional, Oaxaca, on Friday, October 9, 2026. Huesca Manzano, who also worked as a taxi driver, was shot while waiting to provide transportation services to a client.

The Oaxaca State Prosecutor's Office reported that the attack resulted in three deaths. The intended target was allegedly a man known as ‘El Darío,’ identified as a significant generator of violence in the region. The third victim was identified by initials O. F. M. M. ‘El Darío’ reportedly died in a hospital hours after being wounded.

Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting stemmed from a dispute between local criminal groups. While the prosecutor's office stated that the attackers have been fully identified, they have not yet confirmed if Huesca Manzano's journalistic work was a motive. Human rights organization Article 19 and other press freedom advocates have condemned the killing, demanding that authorities prioritize the investigation of his professional activities, noting that he is the ninth journalist killed in Mexico so far this year.
