Journalist Henry Constantin detained in Cuba

Cuban independent journalist Henry Constantin, director of La Hora de Cuba, has been detained for a week in Camagüey under alleged provisional imprisonment. Constantin was taken into custody on September 16 after responding to an official summons. He is currently being held at the Villa María Luisa facility, a State Security headquarters.

Legal representatives report that Constantin has been denied access to his case file, preventing his lawyer from reviewing the formal charges or filing appeals. While a Habeas Corpus petition was presented to the Provincial Popular Court of Camagüey on September 21, the defense maintains they have faced continuous administrative obstacles. Authorities claim the investigation stems from a failure to appear at a scheduled meeting with the Directorate of Identification, Immigration, and Foreigners on September 9.

During his detention, Constantin has reportedly been denied phone calls and family visits. The Inter American Press Association (IAPA) has repudiated the detention, describing it as arbitrary.
