Şükran Soner, veteran labor journalist, passes away

Renowned journalist and Cumhuriyet Foundation board member Şükran Soner has passed away at the age of 80. Soner, who began her career at Cumhuriyet newspaper in 1966, was a prominent figure in Turkish labor journalism, specializing in trade unions, worker rights, and social movements.

Throughout her nearly 60-year career, Soner was a dedicated observer of Turkey’s political and social shifts, including the student and labor movements of the 1960s and 1970s. She held significant leadership roles within the Turkish Journalists' Union (TGS), serving as General President in 2001.

Her legacy includes documenting the history of the Turkish working class through her columns and books, such as ‘Bizim 68’liler’. Her death has prompted discussions regarding the decline of specialized labor reporting in the modern Turkish media landscape.
